Krishna Story 9

WHO ARE YOU, KRISHNA?
by J.K. Sivan

Yasodha  started realizing that Krishna is someone who could not be controlled and he had the uncanny ability to change her mood the moment she neared him to punish for his mischievous deeds. She therefore left him as such to play,  though she pretended to control him. She was aware that in no way he is like the other children and cannot be controlled,  unlike  the  other Gopis  in the village taking charge of their boys..

Krishna  though small, was always in company with  the other big children in the village,  and began going out and play around with them.  Because of his being a little boy,  smaller in size,  and younger than all of them, the bigger boys did not prefer to recognize him in their games or  count him for any role in their group playing. He  just ran with them without taking part in any side in their games. To some extent Yasodha was free from his menace as long as he was away from home!!

One evening all these children selected a big jamboo tree to play with. The bigger boys climed the branches and hung around. Many of them started picking up the jamboo fruits (known as black plum, bluish sour tasting small fruits with a seed embedded).  The tree was not far away from Nandagopan’s palace and so Yasodha permitted Krishna to go with them and play there.

Krishna  also tried to climb  the tree and play on the branches like the other fellows but the leader warned him  “Krishna  you are a small boy. Don’t climb the tree.  You can be down  there  and collect the fruits which fall down when we  climb  the branches and shake them. Collect all the fruits without leaving anything,  in a cloth.  We all can share them later".

Krishna had no option but to  agreeing to this condition.  He  waited for the fruits to fall down.  The other boys climbed the tree branches and  started shaking the branches  so that the unreachable  fruits would fall down.s fell As soon as the fruits began falling down here and there on the mud, Krishna ran and  was busy picking them up As the fruits were damaged due to the fall, they were sticky and were quoted with the mud under the tree.  Krishna too began eating them one by one, without freeing the fruits from mud coating.

One boy has seen what Krishna was doing below!   He alerted others “See what this boy Krishna is doing there, He is not collecting the fruits, but eating them all one by one without even cleaning the fruits from mud covering."

Another boy declared “Krishna is always a very clever and cunning boy as we know.  See, he has eaten most of them quickly,  without caring for our share.”

The leader did not approve of Krishna’s action.  He was angry and said  " I know how to revenge Krishna. His mother is nowadays very strict.  So  we all will go and complain to her that he is eating mud so that she can beat him nicely"

Soon after they came and shared the remaining fruits, they all went to Yasodha and complained that Krishna has eaten  a mouthful of mud that evening.

Yasodha was uneasy and upset. Poor Krishna.  The child may become sick due to some infection. What to do now. How much mud would have gone inside his body.  She started crying.  She could not digest the idea of Krishna falling sick.

"Krishna,  did you eat the mud?"

Krishna replied  “Mom, I did not eat mud. I ate only the fruits which fell down on mud”.

"No aunty. He is lying. We saw him eating handful of mud. You can check his mouth. Something  may beis still there.

Yasodha looked at the innocent looking Krishna’s face. His cheeks, throat, nose and lips were bluish with patches of mud sticking thereto.

"Krishna!  You have become too unbearable, Not a day passes without any complaint about you and your mischief increases intolerably. Don’t lie, open your mouth."

The boys were very happy that Krishna has now been caught red handed. Krishna blinked but did not reply. He nodded his head in negation.

"I say,  you open your mouth"  shouted Yasodha.  As he was still obstinate, she physically force opened his mouth and looked into it.

"What did Yasodha see in his mouth?  Handful of mud?  No.  the entire earth, heaven, the universe and ever moving planetary bodies, seas, oceans, rivers, mountains and all the animate and inanimate  things and she could see her also standing in front of him bending and looking into His mouth"

Yasodha swooned. The other boys did not know what happened to her and  ran away to  report to their parents what happened that evening.  Krishna smiled and closed his mouth. Within a few minutes Yasodha returned to normalcy  and looked at Krishna.

She was bewildered.  He looked the normal child she knew him to be and magnetized her with his smile. She just embraced Krishna with immense affection and love.    No words emanated from her.  Her lips moved and slowly as she held him tightly murmuring "Who are you, Krishna ?"

Krishna Gives Us Absolute Happiness

Happiness in this material world is relative. It is not absolute. It always depends on one's being in a situation that meets certain criteria for making one happy. But because this a world of duality such favorable situations are only temporary. They never last for long. Thus one can never be completely happy for very long in this world.

On the other hand, when one comes to the transcendental platform of basing his happiness upon having a loving relationship with Krishna, he is able to enjoy constant happiness. Love transcends all barriers. And love of the Supreme is the supreme love.

Only A Bonafide Guru Can

Extinguish This Fire

Sri la Prabhupada, one of the greatest Gurus of all times

To be caught up, as we are at the present moment, in the cycle of birth and death, is to be trapped in the blazing forest fire of material existence. When a forest fire becomes massive what can a tiny fire brigade do to extinguish it? Nothing.

But when the Lord sends a merciful downpour of rain extracted from the ocean that inextinguishable forest fire immediately becomes extinguished. Similarly, it is only by the mercy of Lord Sri Krishna that we can be saved from this hellish material existence.

The spiritual master is compared to the cloud which carries that merciful water from the ocean of Krishna to relieve us from our suffering in this material world. Therefore if we want to be delivered from the forest fire of birth and death, we must get the mercy of the bona fide spiritual master.

Krishna Story 8
LOVE BINDS
by J.K. Sivan

If we understand that Krishna is growing, it is implied that his mischief and pranks are also manifold now in keeping with his physical growth. He therefore gave a tough time to Yasodha in controlling him every moment. But what was peculiar about his mischievous acts is that no one in the village admonished him or complained to his mother Yasodha about his pranks. Her neighbour and good friend Kokila one day exclaimed “Oh my! Yasodha!, how are you controlling this little fellow. Even for us a few minutes with him is difficult to manage whenever he comes to play at our place with our kids. You must be a phenomenon to patiently deal with this kid.
Yasodha was perplexed but had no reply. Instead she had a hearty laugh which did not reveal whether she approved his actions or was frustrated.
We all know that children at this age must be very active and be mischievous but Krishna is someone so special he keeps you tied down to closely watch him and supervise his actions. Kokila left for home after some other discussions. Yasodha was pondering over what Kokila said as she herself was puzzled “ how to deal with this little fellow?” Suddenly it struck her that she found an answer in the question posed by Kokila “tied down”. Why not I threaten this little Krishna that I will tie with him a rope to prevent his free movement which will make him obey the commands and be quiet.

Of late he is doing something new. There is always a gang of boys of his age or a couple of years elder as he is the youngest. These boys were instigated by Krishnan to select some house where the pots of butte and curd were easily accessible for them to break and rob the contents, if not possible to steal the contents of the pots alone. The house must be unguarded by the Gopi when this happens. The gopis thus found in most of their houses the butter and curds were less in quantity, or totally missing or the pots broken with contents missing.

Very soon they found out it was all Krishna’s plan. All other boys when threatened of severe action they all unanimously confessed pointing the finger to Krishna. Yasodha when learnt this, felt offended and uneasy. She did not want this irritation to continue. So she felt why she did not think abut this remedial action earlier when she realized what Kokila suggested without her knowledge, should be a solution. To “tie” him..... She shouted “Krishna come here”.
Krishna was quite aware that he is likely to be questioned anytime for his recent exploitations. The small kid slowly came before her inch by inch. Until you behave good I am going to tie a rope around you and fix you to a position wherefrom you cannot move. Only after I am satisfied that you will hereafter stop doing such a mischief I may decide to release you. So saying she took a rope, tied it around his waist. Initially two or three ropes however long they were, could not be enough to tie around his waist and when Krishna realized her anxiety allowed the next rope she brought to be fit to tie around him. The other end of the rope was tied to a big stone grinder under the big shady tree in the back yard. “Now let me see what you do, you mischievous kid, and you are going to remain the whole day tied to this stone grinder until I release you”
So saying Yasodha left him in the backyard to attend to her daily chores giving him a strict look. The moment she found a few tear drops welling around his big eyes, she melted, but controlled her emotion and appeared a strict mother.

Hardly a couple of hours passed since Krishnan was tied to the stone grinder. He sat near it and looked at the huge garden. It was shady under two big tall trees which appeared well built. He slowly moved ahead from where he was in the backyard towards the garden and the huge trees. Strangely the two tall trees were side by side with very little space in between them.
When Krishna neared the huge trees pulling the huge stone grinder tied to the other end, he was able to pass through the trees and reach the other side, whereas the huge grind stone could not pass through because of its size and obstructed his further movement. When Krishna observed this, he smiled and pushed it hard through the gap and within moments the huge trees were pulled out and uprooted because of the weight he gave the stone which hit the trees. With a huge noise the two trees fell down.
Something unbelievable happened there. Where the two huge trees remained fallen and uprooted, a couple of Demigods appeared with folded hands prostrating before Krishna. He was smiling at them and they said:
Oh Lord, we were waiting for this day of deliverance. We were the sons of Lord Kubera, and once when we offended and hurt the feelings of sage Naradha he cursed us to become these trees and when we begged him to pardon us and free us from our sins, he said we were to wait until the day when Lord Krishna would appear on earth and liberate you both. Thus we are fortunate enough today to be blessed and released from our sins. Both the Devas ascended to Heaven after worshipping Krishna. Krishna however remained the innocent mischievous child for outer world.

When Yasodha and others heard the sudden noise of the huge trees falling down at the backyard they rushed to see where was Krishna. The child was still tied to the stone grinder and the boy was sitting between the two fallen trees. It is a miracle that the trees did not fall on him and crush him under. Yasodha prayed God for having saved Krishnan from the near death situation. Perhaps Krishnan silently accepted her prayers, who knows?
Dear Children learn this, If you love God, be sure He loves you more than you do and if you walk one step towards Him, He advances two steps towards you.

Follow the example of a tree, Krishna tells

According to Srimad Bhagavatam, Krishna implored His fellow cowherds to follow the example of the tree in life. The tree has a special significance in the life and teachings of Krishna. During His early days he virtually lived in the forest surrounded by trees. Poet Jayadeva described Him as one living in the forest full of trees swayed by the gentle fragrant breeze cooled by the Yamuna waters. Krishna looked bewitching with a colourful garland of fragrant flowers.

Krishna compares human life with a tree. In the Bhagavad Gita, echoing the concept of Katho-panishads, he says human life is like the eternal Ashvattha tree having roots growing above and branches beneath. Puranas say that during the great deluge, pralaya, when everything drowned in turbulent waters, Krishna, assuming the form of a divine child, sleeps on the leaf of the Ashvattha tree, the tree of life.

Stop Killing Cows and Unborn Children

There is a spirit-soul present in every living thing. Therefore all forms of life should be respected. In the Bhagavad-gita, Lord Sri Krishna explains that the humble sages see with equal vision all varieties of living beings.

This is why a society which freely kills cows and unborn children is a most condemned and unfortunate society. They do not realize how they will be punished by the laws of nature. We try to warn them, but they do not heed our warning.

If they would only stop their heinous activities and chant the holy names of Krishna, this entire planet would be turned into a paradise.

KRISHNA STORY 7

The Crushed Wheel
by J.K. Sivan

Krishna is growing fast. Now it is almost  3 or  4 months  since he is born at Gokulam in Nandagopan’s  palace.  His movements  are now fast and he is able to use his hands and feet .

Yasodha  and Nandagopan are  from now on planning to celebrate his fist birth day many months ahead!  Meantime everyday seemed to be a birth day celebration in their house because ther was continuous feast for the entire village ever since Krishna was born in their house.  Everyone partook in the celebrations.

The streets  are filled with people distributing sweets, buttermilk and jiggery pieces to all passers by.  In groups they  conducted  one act plays, singing in chorus, and games for children.

There was a magician also performing his tricks in one corner of the street, with all the children attracted by his tricks enjoying the show. Women of the village decorated the front yards of their houses with varieties of rangoli. And many gopas spent a lot of time in washing the cows, calves and painting their horns colorfully and decorating them with flowers and clothes.

Some were  playing instruments like pipes, flutes and violin  etc., with a few admirers surrounding them. It  appears there is a big feast today in the palace.  Krishna has been dressed with new baby clothes and someone has fitted a small crown on his head made of flowers. He looked very pretty and beautiful with his ornaments and new dress.

In a big hall, rows of banana leaves are spread and batches of people partaking food are occupying their seats and being served.  Yasodha and Rohini are busy serving them personally to their heart’s content.

As usual presents are pouring in and almost every Gopi takes Krishna from the cradle, embrace him and hug him which makes him look tired.  When he was found sleepy Yasodha  decided to put him to sleep in a separate room free from noise.  In that room there was a big cart used for taking their milk pots, curd pots, and other products in the streets for distribution. It was a four wheeler.  An old wooden cart was it not used for a long time.  Hence it was used to store the spares and other unused items.

Yasodha  as usual  cleaned the area underneath the cart and spread the mat and cloth and laid the sleeping Krishna to rest a while until the group feeding was over.  If he is in this room, she can have a look at him every time she crosses the room to and from kitchen was her idea.

It  so coincided that not only Yasodha selected the space under the cart for Krishna to rest, but someone else also  had selected the same spot!!!!  He  was a demon dispatched by the King Kamsan to destroy Krishna.  The demon was named Chakatasuran – The wheel demon.  He invisibly  visited the house and was hiding in the spare room where now Krishna was sleeping under the cart.  The demon was very happy that Krishna was now alone and conveniently he was in between the four  wooden wheels of a cart.  This opportunity came his way to make his task easy to crush Krishna under the wheels.  Being the demon of wheels  he entered the old wooden wheels and slowly started moving.

At least one wheel is enough to kill Krishna the child is not it?  His entire strength was therefore given to one of the rear wheels which was closer to Krishna’s  head and he was waiting for the right time to move the wheel over Krishna’s head.

Unfortunately for him,  Krishna  woke up from his sleep and looked at the wheel close to him making slight movements. He smiled and watched its movements.  He now moves so he turned his legs towards the wheel which was close to his head and watched it.

When everyone was busy in the hall feasting the wheel demon commenced his operation. He moved with a force towards Krishna who had by this time turned to opposite direction and his legs were close to the approaching wheel.  The moment the wheel came near him he gave a powerful kick to the wheel  which was broken from the cart and lifted up and crashed against the stone wall in a corner.

The old wooden wheel crashed against the strong  granite stone of the wall and was broken to pieces.  The wheel demon never faced in his life such a powerful kick that he broke his ribs and vertebra and a loud cry of anguish and pain emanated from him.  The sudden noise which sounded like a thunder made every one rush to the spare room from where the noise arose.   Krishna  was lying under the upturned cart with milk and curd spilled from the pots which were kept on the cart all over him and was tasting the milk and curd happily.

Everyone  was shocked to find a huge demon crying in pain,  amidst  the broken pieces of the old wooden cart wheel, unmoving with all his bones broken, in a corner of the room, in a pool of blood.

Before they could recover from this sudden shock, the demon breathed his last and was dead.

Krishna  was calm and happy just keeping himself  enjoying the taste of butter, curd and milk all mixed which were dripping into his mouth from the spilled pots on top of the cart which itself was looking toppled.  Probably he was wondering who is going to be the next to combat him??

Shri Narasimha Jayanti

Today in Texas is the appearance day of Lord Nrsimhadeva, who mercifully appeared to protect His devotee Prahlada from being tortured and killed by his demoniac father, Hiranyakasipu. Just as Lord Nrsimhadeva appeared to protect Prahlada, He will also protect us if we humbly take shelter of Him in the same mood of Prahlada. Since we are in gross ignorance of how to do this, Srila Prabhupada has mercifully taught us how to pray to Lord Nrsimhadeva as follows:
bahir nṛsiṁho hṛdaye nṛsiṁhaḥ

"Let Lord Nrsimhadeva sit in the core of my heart, killing all my bad propensities. Let my mind become clean so that I may peacefully worship the Lord and bring peace to the entire world."
This is a most beautiful and wonderful way of praying because not only is the devotee praying for his own purification. He is also simultaneously praying that all the suffering souls of this world can be relieved from their misery. He wants that Krishna consciousness should flood his own heart and that it should flood the universe as well.

KRISHNA STORY 6

A MOTHER’S SINCERE WISH
by J.K. Sivan

Lord Kapila instructing His mother Devahuti
As  you all know, mother is the first god in one’s life. She selflessly cares for her baby before and after delivery,  and subjects herself to any amount of sacrifice for the safety and wellbeing of her child.  Mother is one person irreplaceable in one’s life.  So much of importance is given to her that she is the first named in the list of whom  one should worlship in life for ever. Matha (mother), Pitha (father) Guru (teacher) and dheivam (god)  is the order in which, our scriptures and ancient vedhas put  any mother in the list of whom all one should not fail to  worship. Mother is supreme and so whatever language we first learn is called mother tongue, the nation we belong to is called our mother land, etc.

In  today’s story  we are going to read and appreciate what a mother  once  really wished.  And this story which  relates to the wish of a mother  perhaps is not known to many.  Even if some one had known a part of this story perhaps he or she might have missed the link story which connects to the other integral part of it.

Let us go into the story and  in detail.

Lord Vishnu prior to His Avathar  as  Krishna,  once was also believed to  be born as the Rishi Kapila muni.  There are  some  scriptures and  puranas  referring to this. Sage Kapila was born to Sage Kardhama  and was taught by him all the Vedhas and Sastras.   In  course of time Kapila  learnt all the yogas and later authored and spread the Sankhya Yoga. His mother Devahuthi  was given upadesa by him on Sankya yoga besides the Athma bodha . She was proud of her son being admired  and accepted by all as a great Gnani and  Vedhacharya.

Whatever be the level of highest phllosophy of  life one learns, being a mother, Devahuthi   could not help wishing like any  other  normal woman. Her wish was just limited to her desire to be the mother of Kapila Muni in her next birth also!! She considered herself so fortunate to be his mother.

Soon after Kapila was born, his father, sage Kardhama Rishi retired to the forest for meditation as was the custom in those days.  Near the ashram one day,  he was in trance and meditation when  a few princes,  sorry, not a few, but  60,000 in number!! (they  were called Saharas)  came in search of the horse dispatched by the King, their father as Yagna Aswam.    Whenever a king performs Aswametha Yaga,  a ritual, to proclaim himself invincible and declare himself the powerful, a horse will be decorated and sent free of  any harness.  Whoever stops the horse and prevent its free movement will be declared an enemy at war and fought with.

The horse was found by the Saharas tied to a  tree near  Kardhama Rishi who was in deep meditation.  They thought that the Rishi stole the horse and tied it there  defying the  King’s order.

The Saharas became angry at this and shouted abusing the Rishi.  Their shouting and noise disturbed the meditation of Kardhama Rishi and he just opened his eyes and looked at the Saharas.  Lo!  All the 60000 people were  in flame and burnt to ashes. Where they physically were standing and shouting, only a heap of ash stood as a small hill!

The Rishi resumed his meditation.  Meantime, the King, having waited for long neither got back  his horse  nor received any news of at least any one of his 60000 sons who went in search of the horse.  He therefore  ordered his grandson Anshuman to look for them.

Anshuman searched everywhere  and at last reached Kapila Muni Ashram.  Kapila Muni was now having his ashram  where his father  Kardhama Rishi once  had his. Anshuman was bewildered to  looked at the ash hill and enquired about it and learnt that it was what he was looking for! He fell at the feet of Kapila Muni and  beseeched his mercy and sympathy.     He  learnt that the burnt  fore fathers can be revived to life only with Akash Ganga water sprinkled on them.  He  went back and penanced  for many years and succeeded in bringing to earth the Akash Ganga.  Since  Bageerathan brought her to our land, Ganga earned the name  Bageerathi.

Now  let us  go back to the story and the wish of  Kapila’s mother that  she should again be born his mother in her next birth also.

In his next birth, Kapila Muni was born as Krishna and Kapila’s mother was born as Yasodha. Krishna says in his Gita, while teaching Arjuna, that in Rishis’ he is Kapila.  (Ch. 10-20).  Also the 6th Chapter of Gita is named SANKHYA YOGAM BRAMHA VIDHYA  in which Krishna beautifully narrates the Bakthi Yoga.   In  Srimadh Bhagavath Purana  you can read  how Krishna teaches Sankhya Yoga to Udhdhava Maharishi.

Children,   please recall that as  she wished, Kapila Muni’s mother was born as Yasodha and Krishna became her darling  son.  The great wonder in this combination is,  there is no teaching of Krishna to Yasodha as it had been  in his previous birth as Kapila.  All that he did was numerous  pranks and mischief which turned him uncontrollable, and she was   tired of him  driven to  the extent of even tying him with a rope to a grinder.

KRISHNA STORY 5

THE SUPERNATURAL BABY
by J.K. Sivan
Two Gopis of the Gokulam village were talking to each other when they met at the Yamuna river while bathing and washing clothes.

"Visalam, Did you hear about yesterday's miracle ?"
" Of course,Sathya, are you referring to what happened at our Yasodha’s house yesterday morning?"

"What else is there to talk about as a miracle ?"

"You are right, Sathya. The moment I heard about the commotion at Yasodha’s house i dropped everyting and rushed to her house. Already there was a big crowd there, but I managed to see her. She was crying and choking but I learnt from her the news in bits and pieces."

"What happened really ?"
"It seems a young woman, a stranger to our village, dropped in to greet her and wished to see the beautiful child born in the house, of whom everyone in the village was talking and praising and she said, she was curious to see the baby.
Yasodha innocently invited her inside and showed her Krishna lying in the cradle. The young woman said she has a baby at home in her village and asked Yasodha to permit her to take the baby from cradle and put him on her lap and hug him. Then it seems the woman started playing with Krishna for a while. He was looking at her continuously with a smile as usual on his lips."

"Suddenly the woman begged Yasodha to permit her to breast feed him. as she has been attracted by his charm and she added it will be a privilege to feed him as she was also the young mother of a baby boy at home. Yasodha was carried away by her praising the child and nodded her head."
"Then what happened?"

"Whatever happened has happened!"

"Tell me Sathya, don’t play?"
"Yasodha told me that the woman took Krishna in her arms with a big smile and applied his mouth to her breast and within a moment she shrieked and cried in agony and put him down. There was a huge thudding noise because the woman fell down."

"My God! what an unbelieve shocking sight was it? --where the young village woman was sitting there now was lying a huge demoness with a horrible face and sharp teeth protruding her mouth on either side. Her open, staring, unmoving eyes and her still big frame proved that she was dead instantaneously."
"Tell me fist what happened to the baby Krishna?"

The child was lying on the dead demon's chest playing as usual looking at everyone with a smile on his lips. There were some drops of blood on his lips. Yasodha yelled loud and swooned on seeing this ghastly scene."
Then?

"Nandhagopan and other gopas ran in and were taken aback to see such a huge demoness lying dead with little Krishna lying on her chest playfully".

"Yesterday the entire village was charged with shock and surprise and incessantly talked about the unbelievable luck which saved young Krishna from the demoness. All of them removed her to the forest, and burnt her body there. Then they found out that she had deadly poison anointed around her breast and nipples to kill Krishna while breast feeding him!"
"Did anybody find out who she was and why she came and died at Krishna’s house?"

It was learnt very soon that the demoness bore the name Boothanaa, and she had been sent by the demon king Kamsa. We all know that he was on a mission to kill new born children in the month of Shravan to save him from death.
"Sathya I can hardly believe that Krishna is alive after meeting with the demoness. I am shuddering even to hear what you told me. How is he now? I must go and see him."

There is no change in the always happy baby and he doesnot even know what happened! Luckily for him, the demoness suddenly fell dead. Yasodha is slowly recovering from the shock and there is a strict order now that nobody will be allowed to go near Krishna after this incident. Rohini has taken upon herself the responsibility to guard him always and she prayed God for saving Krishna.
What everyone did not know was, Krishna knew Boothanaa's mission and devised the plan to suck the life out of her instead of sucking her poisonous milk.
